Photographers Photograph Each Other’s Families
So crazy thing is that I work to make other families look beautiful for their family portraits, and I have a hard time doing the same for my family. I have tried many a time over the years, and it has gone well, but at great effort and a need for a spa day afterwards!
My husband and I see the need to hire a photographer, which is hard for me because I am one. And for all the reasons people come to me in the first place (I want to remember this stage my family is in, my kids are growing so fast, I want a beautiful photo of all of us together), I asked my photography friend to take mine!
She lives in L.A. and is a mother, photographer and actress. And I could see all of these roles come into play as I had the lovely experience of being photographed by her. I kept telling her, “This is great, this is so easy! Thank you so much!” She was on the other end of the camera and I could let go and trust she would find the right details to capture us in a beautiful way, and she did! She is a charming person and so positive, the energy she brings made us happy to be together and took away any awkwardness.

What I learned from photographing Catherine is that she is a great model! Not a surprise being a professional actress, but I loved the way she would stand where I asked her too, but then would make small movements in between pauses—-the result? More natural looking photos, because poses were not held for long.
Now how do I translate this to everyday humans who don’t Act on a regular basis? I’m still working on it, but I have a new goal! Catherine was inspiring!
